Shōganji Zen Retreat - Authentic Zen Temple Life in Rural Japan…

Ongoing. Now accepting bookings.

“I have spent 2 years of my life living at Shōganji. Rustic, quirky, and the embodiment of ‘wabi-sabi’, Shōganji is a hidden gem off the tourist trail. I now understand the meaning of the term ‘spiritual home’ – Shōganji is that for me.” - Pierre Black

In 2006 when I first visited Shōganji Zen Retreat, I had no idea of the bond that would develop and the experiences that were to come.

Jiho Kongo, the only full time monk, is an 'international soul' with strong Japanese roots and palpable dedication to his guests. He's eccentric and full of surprises, and his attention as your host is absolutely pivotal to the special experience Shōganji offers. As a Zen teacher, Jiho is not likely to satisfy the modern seeker's addicted proclivity toward incessant mental chatter and intellectualizing. Rather, he teaches through presence, action, and service to others; a living embodiment of Zen that includes humour, imperfection, and humility.

Janet:Willow:me:HosanAtZR.JPG

Shōganji Zen Retreat is a 600 year old Zen Buddhist temple serving an ellipsis of tiny fishing villages that spackle the Saganoseki peninsula just east of the city of Oita, in southern Japan.  Shōganji receives a small number of foreign guests who are interested in experiencing traditional Zen meditation and authentic temple life in rural Japan.

Since that initial visit, I have now spent almost 2 years of my life living and working (and of course meditating) at the retreat.

In 2010, I took full time responsibility for the retreat's online presence and guest bookings with the mandate to increase the number of foreign visitors, while keeping the experience intimate and authentic.

Shōganji Zen Retreat is a hidden gem, off the tourist trail, and a rare opportunity for deep immersion into some less accessible aspects of Japanese culture. It is my great pleasure to facilitate this unique life experience for guests from all over the world. My own time at Shōganji has been life changing. I now understand the meaning of the term ‘spiritual home’ – Shōganji is that for me.     – Pierre Black

GyaTeiJi Zen Temple was first established in the year 1346 and has now been held by the Kono family for three generations. The temple is only a 30 second walk from the house where you will stay, and is where you will practice meditation each morning, and where a variety of other retreat activities are held. GyaTeiJi is also a busy community centre for the local area, giving you the opportunity to see how a real Zen temple operates, and to interact with Japanese temple community. Calligraphy, tea ceremony, traditional kimono dressing, and group meditations are just a few of the regular activities here.

Beppu Zen Retreat is perfectly situated for exploration of Beppu itself as well as the surrounding region. Located in quiet Hiji town, just 10 minutes outside Beppu city, guests are very well connected for easy self-exploration, be it an easy afternoon outing or full day trip. The immediate vicinity is a fantastic location for hiking or cycling at any skill level, and the retreat even provides free bicycles to guests! Beppu city itself is perhaps most famous for its many “Onsen” (natural volcanic hot spring bathhouses), and boasts the highest concentration of natural volcanic onsen in all of Japan. Nearby towns of special interest also include Yufuin, Usuki, Saganoseki, and others. Learn more about the area here.

Some reviews of Beppu Zen Retreat:

"A great experience"

The mediation experience, which included guidance and practice, was the highlight for me. It was complemented by other activities which were of high quality. The latter include calligraphy, tea ceremony, onsen visits, interaction with the local temple community, insightful and fun conversation, and more.I found everything pleasant. No disappointments.

"Amazing experience"

Yodo’s family is just wonderful. It was such a beautiful experience for my first meditation retreat. The warm and kindness of a multigenerational Japanese family, the peace of a beautiful old temple, and the discovery of the very rich Japanese culture and food. Very close to Beppu town for onsen and sand bath experience too.

"A great introduction to Zen Buddhism and Japanese culture"

- Yodo and his family are super nice and welcoming. - You can learn as much about Zen Buddhism as you wish. Yodo is very keen to answer any questions and give advice. - Despite being a Buddhist monk, Yodo also knows about "modern lifestyle" so he is able to give practical advice regarding leading a Zen lifestyle. - Prepare and eat healthy Japanese food. - The house is in a very peaceful town and close enough to a city (Beppu).

Yodo and his family are very nice and relaxed. The house near the temple was comfortable and the food was amazing! I also liked the small quiet town overlooking the ocean. I will go back if I have the change! Thanks a lotI did not have more time to extend my stay!

"Perfect introduction to Zen Buddhism and Japanese culture"

- Truly warm welcoming from Yodo and his whole family. Thank you again for everything - Daily morning meditation - Books provided and recommended by Yodo: great readings really - Times for discussion and introduction of Zen Buddhism - Being taken into a zen-living routine/lifestyle: This taught me much more about how you can actually live a life in zen attitude and habits, and tend to deepen that everyday, without necessarily devoting your entire life to meditation - Introduction to japanese culture through various proposed activies such as visiting onsen, tea ceremony, calligraphy, and how this also echoes with Zen principles - Free time also allowing for self cultivation, reading and discovering the beautiful areaNothing really, except that it was too short maybe ?

"Highly recommended"

This experience exceeded my expectations. Kodo and his family were kind, warm and welcoming, the experience was authentic, and the food was amazing. I agree with all of the previous rave reviews, and would add only a few points: - this was a unique blend of zen meditation practice and Japanese cultural experience, both traditional and contemporary. - Yodo and his family were careful to always provide delicious vegetarian food options for me, even when I was the only vegetarian guest. Thank you to Yodo, Keiko and Michiko for an unforgettable experience!

"A Retreat That Felt Like Home. "

From the moment I began correspondence with Yodo, he was very accommodating in everything we discussed. My arrival plans were constantly changing, but he stayed on top of my emails and collected me from the train station at my requested time. I arrived just before lunchtime, and he sat me down with his lovely wife Keiko for a deliciously fresh meal of Udon. From then til now, it has been a beautiful experience overall. The hospitality and geniality shown by Yodo, Keiko and Yodo’s mother has been above an beyond what one could expect. The meditation practise, beginning at 0630 each morning, centres and grounds your day. From then, it is usually followed by a cup of fresh tea prepared by Yodo’s mother Michiko, then a simple breakfast of brown rice porridge and umoboshi plum. The days have been graced by calligraphy lessons, onsen and sand-bath visits, a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, and a visit to a local bamboo crafts-woman’s store in Beppu. The food has been astoundingly good, with fresh fish and local produce a regular. It is the kind of place I will return to for many years to come, and happily bring my family and friends to share in what is a humble, honest and genuinely striking insight into the lives of Yodo and his family. This is not just a meditation retreat, but a life retreat where you learn how the Zen way extends beyond zazen practise and into the reaches of everyday life. Itatakimasu.I wasn’t disappointed by anything, as I’m not coming here with expectations of pomp or grandeur. However, I think it only fair to state that should you come to this retreat, you too should be prepared for the simple living of a monk. Tatami floors with a futon is subsistent of your room, a simple bath and shower head to bathe in, and a similarly quaint toilet. Everything is clean and functional without excess of luxury, and to be honest, it is more than comfortable. If what you’re after is an authentic experience unclouded by the veils of creature comforts and distractions, in a setting set apart from the busyness of the cities and metropolis, then this is the place. Come with an open mind, leave with a full heart (and belly). Arigato gazaimashita to Yodo and Keiko!

"5 Days of Waking Up"

Yodo was a fantastic host, he went out of his way to make sure I was comfortable and was very knowledgeable about the ways of zen and offered books to help me learn more on my own and was always willing to answer questions. His wife and mother also contributed greatly to my learning about Japanese culture and arts even working through a language barrier; teaching me about Calligraphy and the tea ceremony. The patience of everyone involved and willingness to share Japanese culture made the experience really something that I will remember for the rest of my life.

"Relaxing retreat and zen/Japan experience"

Yodo and his family were so kind and welcoming and accomodating to everyone's needs/interests. The language barrier was not an issue as while both Yodo and his wife spoke some English, they also had a brilliant hand held translation device! The retreat was very relaxing but with the opportunity to do a range of traditional activities, such as calligraphy and a tea ceremony at very very reasonable cost. The food was amazing. It felt like we had a feast for lunch and dinner. Yodo's wife is an excellent cook! I also had the chance to help with the cooking and so i plan to recreate Japanese food at home. The temple and location are beautiful, with lush countryside and top rated hot spring baths (onsen) nearby that you can visit. Yodo also took us to the summer festival at the nearby town and an earthquake experience machine at the local school. As well as the meditation and teaching of japanese culture and the foundations of zen philosophy, there are also a number of books in English that you can read, and Yodo was always happy to answer any questions. The retreat gave a great insight into japanese culture in a way that you could never experience as a standard tourist. Overall a great way to escape the chaos of everyday life and learn something new in a relaxing place with great food. Very comfortable and clean accomodation also. Thank you Yodo and family for a brilliant time - I hope to visit again on my next trip to Japan :-)

"Just what I needed "

The whole experience was just brilliant, Yodo was waiting for me when my train arrived and rushed to help with my bags. He then drove me to the guest house and cooked a meal. All the food was delicious and home cooked, this really is a taste of living in Japan. The Meditation sessions are perfect although the first outdoor one I had to conquer my inner zen as I had a bee buzzing around. Tea with Yodo’s mother is an absolute treat and then breakfast. The morning work is very easy and more tea. Lots of relaxation time if you want or Yodo will drive you to the local Onsen’s, Sand Bath (very hot!) Volcano and hiking. The little town is worth walking around very pretty and abundant with flowering Hydrengea’s. I slept soundly and after the first morning my ankles and hips got used to sitting. I highly recommend this retreat Yodo and his forever smiling wife Keiko make you feel part of the family! Thank you Yodo, Keiko & Michiko - Yodo’s mother, a Professor of Tea Ceremony

"A beautiful Japanese experience"

This experience was beyond my expectations. I sat down with locals who were visiting the temple and have tea with them regardless of language barrier, experienced prayer ceremonies, sat in on a tea ceremony, and explored Oita and neighboring towns. Yodo and his family are extremely kind, it didn’t only feel like a zen meditation retreat, but like a homestay. Meals are home cooked, plentiful, and delicious. I always stayed full. The dishes are far better than any Japanese restaurant I've tried in the USA. It was also very nice to help prepare meals sometimes with Yodo’s wife, who's always smiling and laughing. The small town of Oita is a peaceful place to relax and experience traditional Japanese culture. Just outside of the temple and the guesthouse are beautiful views of the ocean, the mountains, gardens and small farmlands as well as Japanese architecture homes. During free time, just walking in the neighborhood is site-seeing; a few steps away are small rice field, plenty of wild flower gardens, and a short walk to the ocean. Many say that Japan is an expensive country to visit, but the price of this experience at Yodo’s temple and guesthouse is a huge bargain. I traveled solo(female) to the retreat and missed my bus stop by a few stops; Yodo told me to wait there and picked me up. If there are any hesitation on booking this retreat, put it aside, you will be taken care of. Your stay will also help support maintaining the 650+ year old temple. I hope to return soon.

"Excellent Retreat for Stressed out Corporate Folks"

I am a finance professional that has been working a high-stress job for many years without a vacation. Spending a week with Yodo and his family and meditating with at his temple was a god send for my physical and mental well-being. From early morning guided meditation sessions, to freshly home-cooked Japanese meals, to calligraphy classes and tea ceremonies, this retreat affords the opportunity to really get away from it all and immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture. I want to especially highlight the kindness and expertise of Yodo, a trained Zen priest. I was interested in exploring meditation and learning more about eastern philosophy as it pertains to stress management. I fondly remember sitting with Yodo at his kitchen table, communicating over a Google Translate application over the finer points of zen meditation and inner peace. Yodo is a kind, patient, knowledgeable teacher, and even after the retreat I'm applying many of his lessons to my every day life.If you book this retreat, please be aware that this is not a luxury hotel but rather an authentic rural Japanese experience. The room consists of a straw mattress and a cabinet. This is a place to get away from the hustle bustle of corporate / city life and recharge spiritually, not a high-tech resort. As long as you go in with proper expectations on what this is and is not, I'm confident you'll very much enjoy the experience and come out of it with a healthier and expanded mindset.

I really felt at home at the guesthouse. I enjoyed learning about Japanse culturele and Zen meditation. Yodo is an excellent host. He took me to the onsen and all the other activities like a nice concert in the temple and a prayer for the deceased at the peoples home. Also the calligraphy lesson bij Keiko was very nice. It was an experience I will never forget and I'm very thankful for having been a part of the Kono family for a few days.

"Excellent Experience in Oita"

Yodo and his family are very kind and accommodating. I came to Japan for two weeks and my trip to Oita was the highlight of my trip. We conducted Zen meditation in the morning, did temple work, and then explored southern Japan in the afternoon. If you are looking for a get-away from crazy city living, this experience allows you experience beautiful scenery and quiet. It is located in Hiji Town, next to Beppu and Oita (hosting the Rugby World Cup this year). Come with a clear expectation of what you want and Yodo will make that happen. I emphasize that this experience will be what you want it to be. The food was cooked by Yodo's wife and it was absolutely amazing. Authentic, healthy Japanese food and they will accommodate your eating preferences as they did for me. I highly recommend this retreat, as a solo-traveler and as a group as well.

I really want to thank Yodo and his family for their great hospitality. My restless seven-year- old son enjoyed this trip very much. This is his first meditation experience. Meditating in the early morning in a Zen temple in a small town on the hill is a really great experience. You can see a bit of the sea and a lot of mountain from the homestay. One of a kind zen meditation retreat

This retreat exceeded my expectations and more. Yodo is an exceptionally welcoming host, he takes you through the meditation every morning and no matter what your level or experience with meditation, he is very kind and considerate. The guesthouse itself is traditional and charming, but the meditation takes place in the temple next door and each morning you are greeted after meditation with tea and the peaceful beauty of the temple garden.
While the schedule is not strict and there is no rule that you have to participate in the temple activities, I highly recommend joining them if you go. His wife Keiko is the calligraphy master and his mother Michigo a tea ceremony master. Both ladies are incredibly sweet, I had no experience in either art but they were very helpful and their cheerful spirits drive you to do your best.
The food was also a highlight of the stay, Yodo is very accommodating to all dietary restrictions and takes care to cook the meals and he was also open to suggestions, wanting you to try new things. If you can be more flexible with your diet then you will be able experience some true Japanese home style family meals too. Speaking of families, his children are pretty cute and funny if you get the chance to play with them :)
Access to the main Beppu area is pretty easy. Yodo is too kind and drove me into the city area occasionally, but the train station isn’t too far a walk and you are allowed to use the bikes at the retreat. Obviously Beppu itself has a tonne of attractions to keep you occupied, but personally I enjoyed the actual homestay more than the city.
Overall for me it was a once in a lifetime experience. Do you like Japanese culture? Food? Nature? Onsen? The people? Then you should come here! Date of stay: December 2019

Enchanting Zen Meditation Retreat

I cannot recommend enough. I arrived knowing nothing about Zen or meditation but was immediately revived into a family who wanted to teach. Yodo is a true gentleman; selfless and generous with a detailed knowledge of Zen that he is very willing to share. The dawn meditation sessions were mentally and physically edifying and a total joy.
Similarly, the food was incredible and always very flexible to dietary requirements and never disappointed. Keiko is the Calligraphy Master - a real artist - and incredibly kind and encouraging in her method of teaching. I enjoyed her calligraphy sessions enormously.
The accommodation is traditional Japanese and extremely clean and comfortable. The temple is beautiful being 650 years old is simply enchanting - full of atmosphere and very inspiring. Yodo was very willing for me to enter on my own to practise meditation in the free time.
Otherwise there is plenty to occupy yourself beyond the temple. With many onsen towns nearby (highly recommended) and higher up in the mountains which can be reached easily by local train/bus or by car with Yodo. Plus great mountain hiking trails which are very close to the house. With the sea a pleasant stroll downhill.
The house and temple are well located to be reached quickly and easily from Oita Airport. A cheap and easy bus from immediately outside the airport and then Yodo/Keiko pick you up from the bus stop and drive up to the house.
My trip has been an awesome experience and intend to return!

“Despite all the capital letters on Truth and Reality, I knew that Zen had a deep respect for the humble goings-on of everyday life. Reality was not somewhere else, some Divine Plane, it was here right now, in the washing of dishes (rarely with soap, Jiho-san advises), in the collection of water from the spring, and in the unearthing of red onions from the field.”

As you lay in bed, your fingers feel the reeds of the tatami mat underneath your futon, and your eyes gain focus on unidentified Japanese calligraphy across the room. The sound of footsteps passes through the hallway outside your door and you know it’s time to join your host, Hosan, in the temple for an hour of silent meditation.”

Jiho is a wise teacher and a good man. I highly recommend the experience of staying here, to get the most benefit I recommend coming wth an open mind and a desire to work on yourself. This is not just another Japanese tourist experience but something that could change your life if you let it. There is more to life than just the mundane material world. PS Jiho's mum is sweet and only 95 years young! I still follow Jiho's advice, no breakfast, and many mornings I get up early to pull weeds from my own vegetable garden before meditating to the rising sun.

Hands down one of the best experiences in my life. Having lived in Japan for over a year when I visited the retreat, I learnt so much more about the culture and sense of community staying at Shoganji. The dynamic of the retreat changes constantly as old people leave and new people come to stay. You can experience quite an eclectic mix of countries living together, each having their own unique take on lunch and dinner preparations and the philosophies of life. Could not recommend this enough, especially for a solo traveller.

Jiho and his mother are true characters and full of information. The property is large, beautiful and in a lovely part of Japan. As previously mentioned in other reviews, you do need to enter with an open mind and the 5 night minimum stay is there for a very good reason. I would personally recommend longer to get the most out of what Ji...

Since I spent 10 days there for Xmas last year I carry that precious time in my heart.Jiho is an astonishing human being avoiding all the clichés about Buddhism and zen monks.Formidable observer of human nature, life loving and energetic. A very special Xmas that changed me. Each time I am about to give in to stress I just remember what Jiho told us with an amused smile:"it doesn't matter!".
Put it on bucket list. As for me I'll come back as soon as I can!

This is a wonderful place. Five days felt too short. Thank you to my companions and above all to Jiho-san for making it such a special experience.

This is one of the most wonderful times I had in Japan - authentic rural Zen life, simple and clean, full of Zen Buddhism wisdom through the main monk Jiho and his wonderful mum in her nineties, garden work of contemplation, regular Onsen visits, excursions with Jiho's incredible local knowledge to his leisure and capacity and so much more - and best of all - lots of space to do nothing and be with myself

I only stayed for a weekend but I had a wonderful time. I would recommend going for longer (as, indeed, I intend to). I am keeping to Jiho's advice of eating only until I am seventy per cent full so far (well, most of the time....).

Great to live in a different way. Definitely necessary to stay for more than 5 days to get into the swing of life there. Jiho is a very generous and welcoming host. Would go back.

If you're looking for somewhere to "get away from it all" then this is your place. It is also a very authentic way to experience every day life in Japan. Jiho is a very modern and kind monk who went out of his way to make sure we had a good stay - highlights included visits to local onsen and trying out the local cuisine! The morning ceremony is a great way to clear the mind every morning though it's probably an idea to have some meditation experience before arriving as it's zen meditation (ie not guided). Pierre was fantastic at communicating and helping out before and during our stay - Thanks to both of you! Definitely recommend if you're up for an "experience" and open minded to discovering new things.

I'm sure this temple will be one of the most awesome places on Airbnb! The description and website give a good impression of what to expect, but really, you have to check it out yourself to understand how special this place is. Jiho-san and Pierre a wonderful and very generous hosts. Staying with them feels like being part of the family. We felt genuinely nourished by the spiritual energy of the place and our bodies really enjoyed the restfulness and the great meals we prepared together. Oh, and the cool outings of course.... what a precious opportunity to learn more about Japan and its beautiful culture, including the fantastics onsens! Highly recommended in every respect!

From the first email until the last goodbye, Pierre made me feel so welcome. The temple is a special place to practice meditation and yoga and get a feel for temple life. Meals were always prepared together so it felt like we were one big family. The field trips to Usuki and Yufuin were just an added bonus. A rare experience for Japan.

This was by far one the most amazing experiences I've had traveling abroad and the best to date on Airbnb. Jiho and Pierre are incredible hosts and go above and beyond to make your stay at the temple incredibly comfortable, genuine and true to the spirit of Siyoganji. The temple itself allows for one to relax, think and immerse yourself in Japanese Zen culture. In addition to meeting Jiho and Pierre, I met other incredible people visiting and will remain friends for years to come. I won't get…Read more

A wonderful and unique experience - Pierre and Jiho were incredible hosts who went out of the way to make my experience at the temple truly memorable. From picking me up at the station, to incredible meals, daily yoga classes, and an outing to an onsen town - this was an airbnb experience like no other. These guys are providing not just a room but an incredible, and unforgettable experience.

I had a wonderful stay at Shoganji with Jiho and Pierre. This is a truly unique cultural experience - morning meditation, bountiful communal meals, morning work in the garden, trips to local onsens, and much more. I felt genuinely immersed in the daily life of the temple. I look forward to my next visit!

WOW! This experience surpassed my expectations on all accounts. Pierre and Jiho are the warmest hosts I've ever encountered, from being picked up at the train and whisked to an onsen to being dropped off right at the train door - a little teary eyed to leave new friends behind. However long you are planning to stay - add a few days, you'll want them. The food is beyond words and you'll learn quite a bit about Japanese cooking. The ritual and routine of meditation, cooking, and temple service draw you right into an authentic experience that you play a hand in creating. This place is a home away from home for those who seek it. Do not let the distance keep from coming - I took the train and that was half the adventure. This is the place to be if you want an inner and outer journey and truly immersive Japanese experience.

I had a really wonderful time at Jiho and Pierre's place! In many ways, it felt like being part of a "little family" (doing meditation & yoga together, then cooking or helping around, plus some activities on afternoons/days depending on the number of people), and it is something I really want to thank them for. Staying in Jiho's small temple is clearly an unique experience which I recommend! Thanks again Jiho and Pierre for your time and for everything =)

Wow - what a stay! By far the most unique Airbnb experience I had and I never felt so relaxed and 'zen' afterwards. Imagine waking up at 5:45h (after a long sleep, don't worry) to monk Hosan's chanting, then meditate for an hour in the temple, have tea and fun with everyone and do some yoga with Pierre afterwards - and then the day has only begun! Excursions, such as to relaxed hot springs for a bath, and really nice lunches and dinners often prepared by Hosan's 98 year old (!) lovely mother are to follow. Pierre is so friendly, relaxed and open-minded rational guy and monk Hosan is the funnest monk you'll ever see: he drinks beer and jokes around. All in all, great and unique experience you should all try if you're up for it. Thanks again!!!

If you can make this place and these people, a part of your stay in Japan, do it. Finer company or a more welcoming environment cannot be found. My days here truly enriched my experience of Japan. It is a wonderful place to be alone and an equally wonderful place to share. I am very grateful for my time here and am happy to recommend it to any and all who are looking for a unique and fulfilling travel experience.

I had a really great time at Shoganji. Jiho was an amazing host and a very inspiring person and was very welcoming and accommodating to myself and the other guests. He treated us like family and was really kind with his time, cooking delicious, healthy food, taking us on daily trips to the local onsen and even driving us to see some of the magical local sights. The daily 5.30am meditation was challenging at the start but really rewarding. I would have liked more meditation. Whilst it was an amazing experience I think the description as a 'cultural exchange' is more accurate than a meditation retreat, as we met lots of the lovely locals and it was a very hands on experience of living in a temple in the Japanese countryside. Overall a really fantastic and rewarding and inspiring experience.

We absolutely loved our experience at the zen temple. A truly unique experience that can't be compared to anything else. Meditation, making fresh noodles and trips to the onsens were all apart of the fantastic experience. Me and my Girlfriend really enjoyed the experience and thank Jiho again for his hospitality as well is everyone else at the temple. Word of advice though, bring mosquito repellant as they really enjoy you at night.

The Zen Buddhist temple was an amazing experience. Jiho-san was a very amazing host and Pierre was very responsive and helpful along the way. The neighbourhood was very quaint and quiet, with a beautiful view of the waterfront. The unique experience is definitely something everyone should consider experiencing.

From the moment Jiho met us at the train station -- with his wonderful, heartfelt smile, to the moment he saw us off, with that same kind, warm heart, time seemed to stand still -- in a magical, sweet, relaxing, zen-state-of-mind space. This is a welcome, earthy, authentic contrast to the American, high-end-destination spiritual retreats. Not only does a stay at the Zen Temple allow one to learn the gift of "BE-ing in the present moment," but it also provides a deeper understanding of Japanese culture, history, and religion. Jiho is the penultimate host, answering every conceivable question, spending hours in thoughtful dialogue, preparing nutritious and delicious meals, and making sure you experience the beauties and treasures of the surrounding area. To add even more value to your experience, you will find the few guests who may also be on this soulful journey with you, are so interesting, delightful, and multi-faceted, making for fascinating conversations and moments you never expected from such an adventure. Thank you Jiho (and your dear Mother) for three days of awakening!

What a one of a kind off the beaten path experience we were so lucky to have! Jiho was an amazing host and made us feel very welcome. We loved every moment. From waking up and meditating, to having peaceful afternoons just reading while it rained. It was magical and fun. The temple is on a beautiful piece of land surrounded by giant trees and moments from the ocean. Everything is so clean and peaceful. The food is absolutely delicious, and you should definitely go to the bath house. I…Read more

Jiho's Zen Retreat has been a great experience for three days, deserving more time in my next visit. I have appreciated our monk's life, starting with early chanting and meditation and doing some interesting activities such as calligraphy and gardening. Food was great, both the on-site fresh food and the off-site restaurant visits. Jiho is not only a good monk but also a very pleasurable and funny character, looking forward to return as his honourable guest. I may see him in another country as he is interested in many countries that I will be travelling as well.

My second time back, and the experience only got better! Hosan greeted me with a warm smile at the temple. I stayed for a brief two nights, catching up with Hosan, his delightful mom, and two other Airbnb guests who were also there. Thank you Pierre for managing the listing on Hosan's behalf. The morning starts with silent mediation. During the day the four of us explored the nearby beach, the main temple in Oita, and dined on Hosan's delicious lunch and dinner. Some of the best Japanese food you could eat! The accommodations are just has pictured – a traditional, Japanese style thin futon on a tatami mat floor. This stay was during the summertime, which means it is warm! You will be in the hillside, surrounded by lush greenery, bamboo forests, and the sound of the cicadas (the insects that chirp). It's quite charming. This place is perfect for a serious getaway, a reflective time with a monk, and an immersion in Japanese culture. I can't wait to come back a third time. See you soon Hosan.

January 2013

Imagine waking up to the sound of trees rustling in the wind and birds singing to the sunrise. As you lay in bed, your fingers feel the reeds of the tatami mat underneath your futon, and your eyes gain focus on unidentified Japanese calligraphy across the room. The sound of footsteps passes through the hallway outside your door and you know it's time to join your host, Hosan, in the temple for a hour of silent meditation. Welcome to "Zen Retreat - Buddhist Temple, Oita". Oita, a sleepy industrial city on the southern coast of Japan, is a short plane ride from Tokyo. About 2 hours outside of Oita is a Buddhist temple run by a monk named Hosan. This guy will change your life. And if he doesn't, his 94 year old mother will. Together, these hosts provide the most Japanese experience one could hope for. Thanks to Pierre & Yo for adding this listing and managing the account for Hosan. Your morning begins at 5:30am in the shrine area of the temple. Do not be late. Hosan will provide a place for you to sit on the tatami mat. The next 30 mins is something I won't give away, but rather you have to experience first hand. Then, at 6:00am you sit in silence, the sun isn't even up yet. The day wakes up with you as birds begin to chrip and light floats through the transparent panels of the Japanese walls. There is no breakfast at the Zen temple. Instead the next meal is lunch, prepared by his mom at 12:00pm. The afternoon will be filled with activities. Or not. The beach is 5 mins away. There are mountain trails. There is a store in the village filled with all kinds of oddities. You can watch Korean soap operas with his mom during the day, or check your email over their wifi (you won't want to get on computers once you're here). Be sure to take a walk into the orange tree grove, and explore the wooded paths behind the pond. Hosan teaches and believes in the Nishi Health System. You will eat some of the most authentic, healthiest food in his kitchen. His mom prepares the best soba noodles, tempura, diakon, fish. Each night was feast of nutritious proportions. Dinner is at 6 or 7pm. After that the night is free, though you will probably want to go to bed earlier than in your normal life. Did you feel your chest expand while reading any of the above? If yes, book this listing. Yes, it will be different. Yes, you will learn about Japanese culture in a brand new way. And yes, you will have a story to tell when you return.
